REMINDER: Webinar on Managing Pesticide Resistance in Greenhouses and Nurseries TOMORROW at Noon!

Greenhouse IPM practitioners have to produce high quality plants and produce with a more limited chemical arsenal. We also have to deal with several key pests that are known to readily develop resistance to multiple chemical classes, including thrips, whitefly and leafminers. So how do we avoid an uphill run on the resistance treadmill?

Hannah Fraser, Horticulture Entomologist with OMAFA, shares her decades of experience battling resistance issues in fruit crop pests with us in this next webinar.

Webinar Details:

Who: Hannah Fraser, Horticulture Entomologist for OMAFA (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness)

Hosted by: Cara McCreary and Sarah Jandricic, Greenhouse IPM Specialists for OMAFA

What: Don’t grow resistant pests that will get in the way of selling quality produce or beautiful plants! This talk will provide growers and IPM specialists with a solid review of resistance management best practices. This will include an in-depth explanation of the “why’s” for what we should (and shouldn’t) be doing when it comes to stewardship of insecticides in the greenhouse IPM toolbox.

When: Wednesday, August 14th from 12-1 pm

How to Watch: Register for the free, live webinar here: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_QZtye4nzT4y7AiY1iwgRcQ

Some FAQs:

  1. Does the Canadian Greenhouse Conference print posters onsite? No. The printing of your poster is your responsibility. Your poster will be displayed at the assigned poster board number, which you will receive before October 9th.
  2. Can I still enter the poster session if I can’t attend the conference? Yes, as long as your poster is displayed in the conference’s poster session by the assigned time (TBD) on the morning of October 9th.
  3. Is there an oral presentation component to the poster session? No. The judges score your poster based on the criteria in the “Call for Posters”. The poster session is separate from the Speaker Session Research Updates.
  4. Do I need to stand beside my poster at a particular time? No. However, the poster session provides a great opportunity to network with conference attendees and answer questions about your research. Busier times through the poster session tend to be before and after speaker sessions, at breaks and lunchtime.
  5. Is this poster session virtual? No. You are required to display a hard copy of your poster (approximately 120 cm x 90 cm (48” x 36”) in either portrait or landscape orientation) in the poster session by the assigned time. You can provide approval to post your poster PDF on the conference website by filling this out on the poster application form.
  6. Will I get free registration to the conference if I’m entered into the regular poster session? No. Free registration is only provided to the first 20 students who entered the student poster competition.

Thrips Identification Workshop for Growers: Coming to an Ontario Town Near YOU!

It’s no secret that recent outbreaks of thrips species other than western flower thrips (WFT) have made producing greenhouse crops in Ontario harder than usual. This includes species such as onion thrips, Thrips parvispinus, and chrysanthemum thrips.

As control measures are different depending on the thrips species you’re dealing with, the very FIRST step in learning how to manage these pests is proper species identification. If you’re interested in having someone in your greenhouse operation learn how to do this (so you don’t have to rely on government specialists), then keep reading!
